I can’t tell you how many times I’ve googled how to organize books in my classroom or home. Having an abundant number of books means I need a way to organize them so I can access the books I need quickly. Well, lucky for you today I’m going to share how I organize my books at school in my classroom library and the books I use for reading alouds.
Having recently moved classrooms/schools my books needed a reorganization reset this summer. I store my read aloud books in file cabinets. So, I took everything
out of the filing cabinets and sorted the books into categories such as certain authors, wordless, science, social studies, and by month for seasonal books.
To keep the books sorted in the file cabinet I made separators out of file folders and colored cardstock. As you can see by the picture, they are far from fancy, but they are quick and simple, and they work for what I need.
My classroom library is sorted into books by category a little bit. I try to put all the books by the same author together. They get their own sticker so that I can easily find those books by looking in the bins. I also put my non-fiction books together. Some are sorted by topic and others are not.
My students are allowed to take a book home from the classroom library everyday if they choose. They return their books into some white bins that I have. (I have students return books at the end of the day.). I also have a tote that is unmarked that I put all of the books that I read to the students. This is a favorite box to shop from, because kids LOVE reading the books that I have already read.
I feel like I’ve finally found something that works for me at school. Now if I could only find something for all my books at home….
Happy Reading!!
